How many disguises does it take to throw a proper cyclocross event?
When Bike Monkey needed to promote their off-the-rails cyclocross event “The Cross,” they gave us the keys, and total creative freedom. So we filmed a no-dialogue comedy about Carlos, a man on a mission to bypass a store’s stingy two-roll limit on caution tape. Through wigs, muscles, fake mustaches, and a questionable baby costume, Carlos does whatever it takes. Cameos by our producer Taylor Scott (who gets very turned on), former WWE superstar Gabe Tuft, and our amazing makeup artist Celeste as the world’s least impressed clerk. Filmed in a single night at a local hardware store in Santa Rosa, this was one of the most laugh-until-you-cry shoots we’ve ever done.
Two Rolls (The Pandemic Remix)
What if toilet paper was the new caution tape? During the early COVID chaos, we couldn’t resist turning our Bike Monkey short “Caution Tape” into a pandemic-era remix. With TP rolls more coveted than gold, we jumped into post and replaced every yellow strand with a cornball composite of toilet paper.
The result? A surreal, slightly cursed alternate version we lovingly titled Two Rolls. The extended cut even includes our crew breaking down in laughter, because honestly, we couldn’t believe we pulled it off either. Same story, new shortage. And yes, that baby costume still makes it in.
Caution Tape – Culture Pop DNA
Culture Pop Films teamed up once again with longtime creative partners Bike Monkey, the premier cycling event company behind Levi’s GranFondo, to deliver a playful, no-dialogue comedy spot that captures the chaos, obsession, and borderline madness that goes into pulling off an epic race. Filmed on location in Santa Rosa, CA with a skeleton crew and a truckload of imagination, we handled everything from concept and casting to camera, edit, and final delivery, including how to convince a former WWE superstar to strap Carlos to his back and walk out the door. Bike Monkey trusts us with total freedom, and that’s how the weird magic happens.
