Tranquilize. Transport. Trail. Repeat.
It started with a call about a creature in a tree hoarding beer. It ended with a mountain biker released into the wild. This was the very first scripted spot we ever made for Bike Monkey, and it became an instant classic. Deadpan, ridiculous, and somehow still heartfelt. Catch & Release set the tone for every Bike Monkey promo that followed.
Catch & Release – Culture Pop DNA
We had no idea this would become a cornerstone of the Bike Monkey promo legacy. Shot in Santa Rosa, CA to promote the Annadel XC race, this short film features Culture Pop Films staples Carlos Perez and Greg Fisher in their debut roles as themselves… kind of. Carlos delivers his now-signature deadpan stare while Greg tranquilizes a wild mountain biker (yes, with a blow dart), then loads him up and releases him into the dirt trails like a nature documentary.
The cyclist in the tree? That’s none other than Tim Terry, a Culture Pop crew member at the time who was always game for anything. In this case, that meant getting darted, falling from a tree, and being dumped back into the “wild.”
It all kicks off with Greg painting his toenails while Carlos watches Bob Ross, because of course it does. This was the beginning of our full-send approach to scripted comedy for cycling events, and we’ve been topping ourselves ever since.
